Item collecting is a central point of the game. There are hundreds of items to collect, and arranging them in your house by series, themes, and sets earn you HRA (Happy Room Academy) points.
There is always something to strive for-whether it be paying off loans on your house to get the multiple expansions, getting 999,999,999 bells (AC currency) in the game to recieve the much-revered post model, collecting all the furniture in one series to proudly display on your first or second floor, fishing every single kind of fish to get the golden fishing rod, capturing every type of insect to get the golden net, or finding the NES game Legend of Zelda (proven to be in the game!) by some humongous glitch of luck.
To summarize, there is always something to do in this game-tasks for villagers (rewarded with clothes, furniture, paper, etc), fishing (sell them to Tom Nook, the shopkeeper, for bells, or money), taking a visit to your local island (requires Gameboy Advance and GBA/Gamecube link cable), digging up fossils and sending them in to the Farway Museum for identification, decorating your house with your favorite themes and series, planting flowers all over, writing letters to villagers, playing your NES games (Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong 3, Donkey Kong Jr, Soccer, Tennis, Baseball, Wario's Woods, Clu Clu Land, Clu Clu Land D, Golf, Pinball, Excitebike, and of course those that nobody has found yet), or just running around for the heck of it.
Hours upon hours of fun. The only negative thing I have to say is that it is a bit of a curse. Only with the greatest self discipline can you pry yourself away from the gamecube and press that big button to turn it off.
