food
Lunch at Chotiwala near the main street near the post office and not too far from the big ben restaurant.
The food is OK.
Night dinner at the restaurant next to Chotiwala (forgot the name). OK. Don't like the curry much.
6/12/04 5:33 pm Dinner: Chotiwala beside having various species of roaches, this seem to be an excellent restaurant. The Dosa seems to be a main attraction here. It is cheap and everyone is ordering it (40R). It looks like an huge, impressive cannon.
15/12/04 12:58 pm Lunch at little Tibet
Pretty positive: Little Tibet Food is OK Large selection of soup Large selection of food Good service Rooftop is crowed but with good view. The owner is from Nepal. The Tibetan food looks good. Vegetarian Momo (dumplings) is ok. Soups are good but not great. The so called toast, came with the soup is a waste. It is not toasted and is dry.
16/12/04 7:47 pm Dinner at Meherangarh Fort It is absolutely stupid, having a one man dinner at the top of a romantic fort. Well, a little bit of luxury once a while isn't a bad idea. All I need is just an ATM machine to access my endless wealth.
Only a few tourists dine at the fort. I guess it is not a very convenient location.
Vegetarian thali cost 300 Rupees, pretty reasonable at the western standard.
The waiters looked very bored.
The musician is being totally ignored. In desperation, he sang loudly to attract attention.
I find the only clean toilet I have seen in India.
Now, more and more people is coming.
The thali tasted OK, some traditional Rajasthan selections, nothing too spectacular.
The desert tasted good, called rosemary or something.
What am I enjoying? Perhaps just a feeling of being the upper class? Everyone, once a while, wants to look important, to look like a millionaire, to enjoy the superiority of the fortunate vs. the suffering of the unfortunate, like a self-illusive maharaja,
19/12/04 7:07 pm Padmini Resturant: Exp: Mildly positive I am waiting for my meal. The tomato soup is OK but not great. The Rajasthan Special Thali is good (100R). It does have its character.
The food is cheap but the waiters are very good at inventing non existing tax. I paid 70 Rupees tax for a 130R meal. Well, the waiters are enthusiastic, perhaps too enthusiastic. They even mince the bread for me with their fingers. That's OK, I can tell they are nice and friendly people so I don't mind helping them out with those goofy tax.
The Padmini disk is small but surprisingly filling taking with nan.
The restaurant is well decorated with glasses and charges a ridiculous price of 300 for the set menu. It is the price I paid for the luxury dinner at the Jodhpur Fort.
The soup is kind of watery and came from a bottle.
The other food is OK, but 300R?
The bill has come and they seem intentionally overcharge 50 rupees for no particular reason. It seems to be quite common in the restaurant around here, but other meals are cheap, so I just overlook them, this one is already over priced. The manager quickly corrects the error.
In India, paying more doesn't give you better service (unless you stay with the luxury tour package).
No wonder they want to charge rooms in advance.
21/12/04 10:35 am Resturant Haveli Katoun The food is reasonably priced. The atmosphere is friendly. The garden hotel is a bit ruined, but the food is good.
Breakfast main disk from 30R - 50R, pops 15R Thali is 100R The food is great. I ordered Bhaji Puri, the bird is not included in the breakfast
3/1/05 1:11 pm Lunch @ Sheesh Mahal 140+20 tax + 20 tips They don't have receipt and seemed to charge tax in arbitrary. The food is good. The service is not so good. It is a cheap hotel thinking they are the 5 star hotels. The guy in reception seem to be doubtful that a backpacker can afford the R1190 (US$25) room charge. No warm feeling for people they don't think is rich.
5/1/05 7:10 pm Vega Resturant in Alka hotel near connaught place Special Thali Deluxe 195R The meal is good, very good for local favorite. One of the best veg thali I have tried in my trip. Too much spice for a tourist like be but that is understandable, for the food are marketed towards the local taste.
8/1/05 7:38 pm Dinner at Tandoori Junction Not a cheap restaurant Tandoori Chaat 185R soup 85R Paranta 55R Not sure if I like the food (too spicy for m) but they are surly skillfully cooked and very characteristic, not the usual kind. Oh and they also have songs. total cost 410R, oops.
9/1/05 7:02 pm Dinner at Parikrama the revolving restaurant Ordered some stuff potatoes 150 some herbal soup 85 Malsala Kluch? 45 Pop 40 The price is just right for this kind of restaurant The food is good and the view is OK. Delhi night scenic is not particularly sexy.
10/1/05 5:54 pm Kwality Resturant So the last-last Indian meal is Veggie Pizza, that's OK. At least the samosa is Indian. The food is OK, hard to tell for it is yet dinner time and all they have is teatime food. It is extremely strange that most up market restaurant in India start dinner at 7:00pm sharp. Sunset is at 5:30pm, don't people get hungry then?
